Liverpool target Rayan Cherki to remain at Lyon this January

Rayan Cherki (21) is in a rich vein of form currently, however, he may be in his final few months, even weeks, at formative club Olympique Lyonnais. Reports have suggested that, with Lyon needing to sell this January in order to avoid relegation to Ligue 2, Cherki could leave his formative club, who believe that the playmaker is worth around €30-35m.

There are interested parties too. According to Fabrice Hawkins, Liverpool have intensified their efforts to sign the France youth international, who signed a new deal with OL at the start of the season, which runs until the end of next season. Speaking about his future with Canal Plus last week, Cherki was vague about his future, however, L’Équipe understands that the player’s wish is to remain at the Groupama Stadium this January.

He wishes to remain with his formative club at least until the end of the season. That means that Paris Saint-Germain, who had also previously shown an interest in Cherki, are unlikely to re-ignite their interest. As previously reported exclusively by Get French Football News and confirmed by L’Équipe, Les Parisiens do not wish to re-enter negotiations after feeling disrespected by the player’s entourage last summer. A deal had been agreed to take Cherki to the Parc des Princes before his entourage ultimately then pushed for the player to go to Borussia Dortmund.

The only problem, however, the Bundesliga side never saw an offer accepted by OL. Cherki’s future remains unclear. In the short-term, it seemingly lies at Lyon, but should he continue his rich vein of form, the Frenchman could attract some high-profile suitors come the summer.
