According to Fabrizio Romano, Donyell Malen is in Germany to complete his move from PSV to Borussia Dortmund for a fee of €30 million. Romano also confirmed that Liverpool were interested in the Dutchman but failed to make a bid, allowing Dortmund to jump ahead in the queue.

The reported price of €30 million is a bargain when considering Malen’s age and ability. At 22, the forward is already a regular for the Netherlands squad as well as a consistent goalscorer.

Just last season, he netted 27 goals and registered a further ten assists. Those are numbers similar to players worth €50 million or more.

The fact is, Liverpool may regret not pursuing a deal that wouldn’t have exactly broken the bank. Interestingly enough, the money made from sales so far this summer reaches a tally of £33.5 million, which is €39 million.

The asking price for Malen was €30 million, making it a tally the Reds could have afforded.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

The focus seems to be on two things this summer. Finding a Gini Wijnaldum replacement and tying key players down to new contracts. And that could be why the Reds missed out on Donyell Malen. Alternatively, it could have been an issue with personal terms and wages.

The fact is, however, not even a bid was made-  suggesting that the aforementioned interest simply wasn’t strong enough compared to Dortmund’s, who needed a replacement for Jadon Sancho.

Only time will tell whether Liverpool regret not making the move.
