Liverpool opened their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a breathless 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield.
Before a ball was kicked, Anfield stood together to pay tribute to Diogo Jota, with heartfelt applause sweeping the ground. But amid the warmth of that moment, the game was later soured by an incident in which Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported racist abuse during the first half.
On the pitch, Hugo Ekitike wasted no time in announcing himself to the Anfield crowd. The French forward struck on 37 minutes with a sharp right-footed finish after Alexis Mac Allister’s clever assist.
Ekitike turned provider just after the break, setting up Cody Gakpo to double Liverpool’s advantage.
The Cherries refused to wilt, and it was Semenyo who dragged them back into the contest.
A quick counter on 64 minutes saw him slot past Alisson for 2-1, before he struck again 12 minutes later with another composed finish, levelling the scores at 2-2 and sending the away fans into raptures.
With two minutes left to play, substitute Federico Chiesa reacted well to an awkward bounce before driving in to restore the home side’s lead.
In added time, Mohamed Salah did what he does best - racing onto Wataru Endo’s pass and smashing home the fourth, sealing the points with his 246th goal for the club.
