Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino’s agent has revealed contract talks are ‘on the right track’ and the Reds are ‘superbly positioned’ to extend his deal in the coming weeks.

Firmino had been one of the shining lights of the Reds’ season before he was struck down with a calf injury.

Indeed, he’d directly contributed to 10 Premier League goals in 13 games. That included a ridiculous outing in the 9-0 win over Bournemouth, in which he scored two goals and assisted three.

On top of that, the Brazilian has been in form in European competition, with two goals and an assist in six games. Despite the fact he’s spent the last eight games on the sidelines, he’s still the third-highest goalscorer at the club this term.

As such, the injury has been to the detriment of the club. With Firmino’s impact this season, and for his entire Liverpool career being clear, it’s little wonder Jurgen Klopp wants his star to remain at the club.

His contract is up at the end of the season, and there has been reported interest from Inter Milan.

That means coming to an agreement over a new deal is all the more important, given they are waiting in the wings to snap him up.

Luckily for the Reds, it sounds as if negotiations are progressing well, as per his agent, Roger Wittman.

“It’s a very long relationship between Roberto and Liverpool. Roberto feels good,” he told Sky Germany.

The agreement could come very soon, too, with Wittman offering a timeframe in which it could be completed.

“At the moment we’re in a great exchange and in February we’ll probably know where the journey is going. But Roberto also has to have a say in order to reach an agreement with Liverpool,” he added.

“We’re on the right track. We’re having really good talks with Liverpool. They’re a superbly positioned club.”

That news will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans. Firmino is one of their top goalscorers in the Premier League era, and his recent resurgence shows he can keep that up despite being over the age of 30.

Amid a poor run for the Anfield outfit, keeping a player of his calibre on board will be a massive boost.
