Liverpool stars set to be axed from England's Euro 2024 squad | OneFootball

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been left out of the final England squad for Euro 2024, with teammate Jarell Quansah also expected to miss out.

Gareth Southgate must bid farewell to seven players from his preliminary squad before he announces his 26-man team on Saturday and put the wheels in motion by dropping Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison earlier this week.

England have since confirmed the departures of both Maddison and Jones, who have left the camp after being told they would not make the final squad.

Numerous reports state centre-back Quansah is also expected to miss out, leaving Southgate with four further cuts to make before Saturday's deadline.

Liverpool will still have representation in the Three Lions camp, however. Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold's position is not believed to be in doubt, while versatile defender Joe Gomez appears to have won the battle to keep hold of his place in the squad.

Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite are believed to make up the remainder of the unfortunate seven casualties.

Despite his latest decisions, Southgate has spoken highly of both Jones and Quansah, backing the Liverpool duo to become regulars in the senior squad in the near future.

"Curtis, we watched all last summer with our Under-21s," Southgate told England media recently. "[He] had very good spells during this season then missed spells with an injury, a very unfortunate red card and at the end of the season dropped out of Liverpool's team.

"But we saw enough through the season to be excited about what he might be able to do and what he can bring to the group."

On Quansah, Southgate added: "Jarell had a super season with Liverpool, I mean you've only got to see the games that his manager picked him for. He was in the team and a couple of other high-profile players weren't in that position, so that was a sign of how well Jurgen [Klopp] thought he was doing.

"He again has had an amazing transition this season from a loan spell further down the leagues last year [and] adapted to life in the Premier League really well. [He has] some great attributes as a centre-back so we're looking forward to seeing him and building on what we saw last time with Jarrad Branthwaite as well."
