Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool remains unresolved, with the Dutch defender dismissing claims that he has already agreed a new deal. Despite speculation on social media suggesting an extension is in place, the 33-year-old centre-back made it clear that no contract has been signed.
Van Dijk’s current deal expires at the end of the season, leaving him free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of England. When questioned about his situation following Liverpool’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final, the captain’s response was blunt: “What the future brings I have no idea. Anybody who says they know it – they are wrong.”

Liverpool’s hierarchy face a crucial decision. With the club entering a new era under Arne Slot, tying down an experienced leader like Van Dijk could be vital. However, the lack of clarity over his contract situation raises questions about whether Liverpool are prepared to offer terms that match his expectations.
Unlike Mohamed Salah, who has openly expressed frustration over his own contract negotiations, Van Dijk has remained composed. His focus remains on performances rather than off-field discussions, a stance that has helped maintain stability within the squad.
The Dutchman underlined his importance to the team with a commanding display against Spurs, capping the night with a goal. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding Liverpool back to Wembley, where they will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final next month.
Reflecting on the performance, Van Dijk emphasised the squad’s commitment: “We needed a complete performance. At half-time I think we could get a level up with intensity. But to win here like we did tonight is great for the team and the club.”
As Liverpool push for multiple trophies, Van Dijk remains central to their ambitions. Yet, without a confirmed contract extension, uncertainty lingers. If a new deal is not agreed soon, Liverpool risk losing one of their most influential figures on a free transfer.
