Liverpool are among five Premier League clubs to have signed up for plans to form a Super League by some of Europe’s elite clubs as a breakaway with UEFA set to announce their new Champions League plans tomorrow.

Monday sees the Champions League set for a shake-up with it going to be announced that the competition is going to expand to 36-teams from 2024.

However, in a potential blow to the competition, some of Europe’s elite clubs have signed up to form a breakaway Super League instead in a direct challenge to the new plans UEFA have for their competition.

The Times reports that Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all agreed to the proposals for the Super League and have signed up, with 11 clubs in total currently willing to form the breakaway league.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have not yet decided what their stance is on the competition.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This is a really dramatic development potentially, just ahead of the Champions League revamp being announced too.

Of course, it remains to be seen if such plans go ahead as it has been mentioned before but, even so, it seems significant that the Reds have at least agreed to join in with the Super League if it is indeed formed.
