Nathan Redmond gave Southampton the lead after 13 minutes when he cut in off the left and curled an unstoppable strike beyond Alisson into the far corner.

The Reds thought they had found a swift equaliser, only for Roberto Firmino’s header to be ruled out for offside.

But the goal did come through Takumi Minamino as he thundered in high at the near post against his former club with an emphatic effort.

Diogo Jota and Firmino both went extremely close with efforts shortly after the break as the Reds pushed for the lead goal which finally arrived on 67 minutes thanks to a brilliant reflex action when Joël Matip instinctively headed a clearance attempt off Kyle Walker-Peters from a corner which looped beyond Alex McCarthy for the winner.

The result means that the Reds go into the final game of the season just one point behind leaders Manchester City.
