Liverpool came from behind to stun Manchester United with a 2-1 victory at The Leigh Sports Village this afternoon.

Ella Toone fired Manchester United into an early lead in the North West derby, however, Millie Turner’s own goal brought Liverpool level. The visitors then went on to claim the three points thanks to Taylor Hinds’ second half goal.

It was a dream start for Manchester United as they broke the deadlock inside four minutes. Leah Galton ran clean through on goal and while the winger could only hit the upright, the ball eventually found its way to Toone who made no mistake in giving her side the lead.

Marc Skinner’s team looked to be having the better of the play in the early exchanges and they nearly added to their lead when Turner rattled the bar with a powerful header.

The Red Devils were made to rue their missed opportunities as Liverpool levelled with their first real effort on goal. A delightful cross from the right-hand side caused all sorts of trouble in the Manchester United box with Emma Koivisto throwing her head at the ball. The Liverpool defender looked to have missed the ball before it glanced off Turner and crept in at the back post. Some angles seemed to suggest that the ball deflected off Koivisto’s arm but the referee and her assistant were in no doubt that the goal should stand.

That goal breathed new life into Liverpool and they looked the stronger side in the latter stages of the first half. The Reds even came agonisingly close to taking a shock lead when a vicious close range volley from Missy Bo Kearns forced a terrific save from Mary Earps. The England international tipped the ball over the bar to keep her side level.

In the second half, Manchester United struggled to cope with Liverpool’s corners and they were eventually punished in the 68th minute when captain Hinds stabbed the ball in from close range to put her side 2-1 up.

The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser but rarely troubled Teagan Micah in the Liverpool goal, Hannah Blundell going closest late on. The visitors were able to hang on and claim a historic victory.

This afternoon’s victory takes Liverpool level on points with Manchester United. The Red Devils retain fourth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table on goal difference.
