Amid intense speculation, Trent Alexander-Arnold recently broke the silence on his Liverpool future. The Englishman was rather coy about his future, though he did not vehemently deny the possibility of a potential exit from Liverpool.

The right-back’s current contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season, meaning he could become a free agent in the summer. This has put Real Madrid on red alert, with the reigning European champions reportedly pursuing a Bosman move.

Townsend, Sutton back Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid

As speculation over his future continues, former English footballers Andros Townsend and Chris Button have backed the right-back to join Real Madrid.

Speaking at BBC’s Monday Night Club, Townsend, a former Tottenham and Everton star, said it will be difficult for Alexander-Arnold to say no to Real Madrid.

“I don’t think he necessarily wants to leave Liverpool, but Real Madrid are Real Madrid,” Townsend said (h/t AS).

“If there is interest from Real Madrid, I don’t think as a player you can turn them down. He can’t say no to Real Madrid. He’s won the Champions League and the Premier League with Liverpool, he’s won everything. I don’t think he can turn down Real Madrid,” he added.

Townsend’s words were echoed by another pundit Chris Sutton, who is fully convinced that the Englishman will join Real Madrid next summer.

“I think he will go to Real Madrid,” said Sutton, who went on to explain the discrepancy in negotiations between him and Liverpool. He also pointed out how his position is different to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

“Trent has to defend himself and say that his previous contract was done in private and that this is how I have handled things in the past,” he said.

Sutton was talking about how previous negotiations with Liverpool were done in private and why this one shouldn’t be either. He added that it is unusual that a player of his calibre is in the final year of his contract at Liverpool.

“It is unusual for a club of Liverpool’s size, and for what he has done there, that he is in the last year of his contract,” he said.

“It is different for Salah and Van Dijk because they are in their thirties. For Trent Alexander-Arnold, this should not be happening. How many clubs out there are bigger than Real Madrid?” he concluded.
