ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Doku only turned 18 earlier this year and is still in the infancy of his professional career. He has plenty of years of development ahead of him and Liverpool not signing him in the summer does not mean that they have missed out on him entirely. They now have the chance to watch how he progresses at France to see if he can become a consistent performer at the top level and capable of playing for Liverpool.

He has had a slow start to life at Rennes, with no goals or assists in Ligue 1 or the Champions League thus far. Doku has started three games in Ligue 1 and two in the Champions League, with a further four appearances coming off the bench across the two competitions. This shows that he is still settling in at Rennes and is yet to hit his full stride, so these stats may not be a fair reflection of where he is currently at in his development.

Despite his tender age, Roberto Martinez has placed plenty of trust in him at international level. Belgium boast some incredible attacking talent amongst their ranks, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Thorgan and Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Dries Mertens to name but a few. Even with these players, Doku has been given five caps by Belgium this year, scoring once for his country – showing that Martinez sees potential in him.
