Liverpool are one of a number of teams reportedly keeping a close eye on Alfonso Pastor’s negotiations with Sevilla this month.

According to AS, as transcribed by Tribal Football, Pastor is set to become a free agent this summer and Sevilla are working hard to pin him down to a new contract.

The report claims Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are among the teams waiting to see if they can snap the goalkeeper up on a free.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This deal would not make much sense for Liverpool because they already have Caoimhin Kelleher at the club. Pastor is only two years younger than Kelleher, who has already proven himself to be a reliable back-up option for the Reds this season. Kelleher has played five competitive games for Liverpool this term, conceding three goals, whilst Pastor has only played one competitive game in his career and let in four.

It is only a small sample size, so it is impossible to say with complete certainty, but based on the evidence we have to work with, Liverpool could be better off keeping Kelleher. Pastor has not shown enough in his career, to date, to suggest that he will be an upgrade on Kelleher and be a worthwhile addition to Liverpool’s squad. Unless, Liverpool sign Pastor and loan him out with the intention of selling him for profit at a later date. If that is their tactic, then it could be a good business move by the club and, therefore, be worth them keeping an eye on his situation.
