Liverpool are reportedly keen on a summer swoop for Fiorentina central defender Nikola Milenkovic to bolster their options at the back ahead of next season.
According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, as transcribed by the Daily Express, Liverpool have been in contact with his agent as they consider a bid for the Serbian international.
The report also claims that Fiorentina are looking for a fee of £30m for the defender, whose contract expires in the summer of 2022.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Liverpool’s pursuit of Milenkovic could hinge on what Ozan Kabak does in the next few months in the Premier League and Champions League. Kabak joined Liverpool on loan from Bundesliga side Schalke in January and the club holds an option to sign him permanently in the summer if they wish to. This means that Kabak’s form could decide what Liverpool do in the transfer window at the end of the season.
Kabak has only played twice in the Premier League for Liverpool, but both games ended in defeat with five goals conceded to Leicester and Everton. The Turkish defender has struggled with defending the space in-behind him that is left with the way Liverpool set up their defensive line, with forwards seemingly able to beat him for pace with ease – as shown by goals by Jamie Vardy, Richarlison, Harvey Barnes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
If this worrying trend continues then Liverpool may opt against keeping Kabak around in the long-term. That could then open the door for Michael Edwards to start making serious moves for Milenkovic, or another defender, to give Klopp better options in defence next season.
