Bild journalist Christian Falk has revealed that Liverpool are considering whether or not they want to sign Ozan Kabak from Schalke in the January transfer window.

Falk says that Liverpool are not sure about Kabak’s price and are not yet fully convinced ahead of the window, with Schalke reportedly after €25m for the centre-back.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Looking at Kabak’s data from the season so far, Liverpool should be avoiding a deal for the Turkish defender and look at the options they already have. Kabak has struggled badly in the Bundesliga for Schalke this season, averaging a dismal WhoScored rating of 5.54 across four appearances – suggesting that he has been below-par in Germany so far. In those four games, Schalke conceded a whopping 17 goals – eight against Bayern, two against Mainz, three against Werder Bremen and four against Borussia Monchengladbach.

This suggests that he may not be the best man to come in and help out Liverpool’s defence in the second half of the campaign. If anything, his stats suggest that he could be a detriment to Jurgen Klopp’s squad and that €25m is too much money to spend on a gamble – given that he is only 20 and could either continue this poor form or improve and turn into a reliable centre-back.

The form of Nat Phillips could also be taken into consideration, given that the 24-year-old has impressed in his appearances this season. He has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.24 in the Premier League – a stark contrast to the form of Kabak. In two Premier League matches, Phillips has won 13 aerial battles, four tackles, four interceptions, one block and made 13 clearances – suggesting that Liverpool could be better off avoiding Kabak and sticking with Phillips.
