Liverpool Transfer News – Matheus Nunes

The Daily Mail has reported that Liverpool is lining up a potential approach for Wolves midfielder Nunes in the summer transfer window, with a squad revamp said to be high on the priority list at Anfield.

Despite only moving to Molineux last year from Sporting Lisbon for a £38 million fee, the Portugal international has caught the eye of Reds boss Klopp due to his composed displays in the Premier League this season.

Salary Sport has shown that the 24-year-old earns £100,000 per week at the Old Gold, which could be set to increase significantly if Liverpool accelerate their initial interest in his services. Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is also receiving heavy interest from the Merseyside giants over the possibility of a summer switch.

Nevertheless, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Nunes will be courted in addition to Bellingham, with the Reds looking to bring in multiple midfielders to freshen up the engine room.

What has Ryan Taylor said about Matheus Nunes?

Daily Express journalist Taylor has shed light on the situation, saying that Nunes is ‘rated very highly’ at Liverpool, also stating that they Premier League giants were in the race for his signature last summer before he completed a transfer to Wolves.

Taylor told GMS: “Absolutely, I think it’s clear at the moment that [Matheus] Nunes is actually a player that is rated very highly by Liverpool. I know the reports the other week came out of the blue, but if you rewind the clock to last summer, they were actually very interested in signing the player from Sporting.

“In the end, they decided to prioritise a striker to replace Mane, or forward as such in [Darwin] Nunez,”.

Would Matheus Nunes be a good fit for the Reds?

Liverpool could use some new faces in midfield, especially given the fact their drop in intensity in the central areas has been noticeable in the last few months. This is perhaps understandable due to a bruising 2021/22 campaign that saw the Reds compete in a whopping 63 fixtures.

Pressing the reset button will be on Klopp’s mind heading into next season, with new signings likely to bolster their squad for the long term. Nunes would be an ideal candidate to provide some fresh ideas and it is unsurprising that the club are said to be very keen on bringing him to Merseyside.

Nunes has been a standout for a Wolves team that has struggled in the Premier League up to now, performing 65 ball recoveries this season for his current employers. Calmness in possession is another of his key attributes, with WhoScored noting that the former Sporting star has recorded an average pass success rate of 85.2% in his exploits circa 2022/23.

In the FA Cup, Nunes was particularly impressive in both the original third-round tie and subsequent replay that eventually resulted in Liverpool advancing to the next stage with a 1-0 win at Molineux. On that evidence, it could be only a matter of time until we see Nunes arrive at Anfield.
