Liverpool players ‘will have got around’ Quansah after Man United mistake | OneFootball

Dominic Matteo has said the Liverpool players will have got around Jarell Quansah after the youngster’s mistake in the draw at Manchester United.

Quansah conceded possession with a slack pass with Liverpool leading at Old Trafford and his mistake was punished emphatically as Bruno Fernandes scored a long-range equaliser.

The clash ended 2-2 with Liverpool missing the chance to move back to the top of the Premier League, with Arsenal the new leaders on goal difference.

Quansah’s selection was a surprise with Ibrahima Konate on the bench but ex-Liverpool defender Matteo has said the 21-year-old’s form earned his place in the side.

“I think Quansah’s been playing so so well and I think he’s one for the future like you wouldn’t believe. He reads the game very very well, he understands it, he’s got good size, he’s quick, and I think Virgil (Van Dijk) and him have got a really good connection,” Matteo exclusively told The Football Faithful, at an event hosted by William Hill.

“Was I surprised that Konate didn’t play? Maybe, but I think because of Quansah’s form he’s had to play him because he’s been so good. Only the manager knows the reasons behind that but I think Quansah has been absolutely outstanding.

“Yes, he’s made a mistake but I remember being that age and making similar mistakes. You learn from it and you don’t do it again. That’s just part of growth as a young footballer.

“One thing I do know about the Liverpool players is they will have got around him. Don’t worry about it, you’ve done really well for us. I know the senior players, Andy Robertson and Virgil, will have been around him to say, listen, we’ve all made them mistakes.

“He bounced back it didn’t seem to impact the rest of his game, but that’s the Premier League. Slight mistakes get punished and, let’s be honest, Liverpool should have been away and the game done.”

Matteo came through the academy system at Liverpool and said he has been delighted to see several graduates handed opportunities this season. Quansah and Conor Bradley are among the academy products who have earned a regular role in Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

“Some of the young lads coming through from all different angles and some that people probably hadn’t heard of, getting game time this season and doing well. I think that’s just a brilliant sign for the future of Liverpool.

“I think players like Harvey Elliott, who have been in that position, are key. I’ve met him a couple of times Harvey Elliott and he understands because he’s been through that system. And Trent (Alexander-Arnold), who’s a little bit older, helping them young players and giving them advice. It’s so important.

“I had the same when I was at Liverpool. Steve Nicol, Ronnie Whelan, all those great players giving you advice. I think there’s something similar now. I know Robbie Fowler goes back in to work with the strikers, Steve McManaman, and Rob Jones, they’ve got it running very well the club.

“When you see the young players coming through, getting better and improving, that’s what you want. With the experience around them, I can just see them getting better, and when you’ve had a taste of it you want to be around that team. Liverpool, in my opinion, will be challenging every year and playing in big games is just brilliant for your experience and growth as a footballer.”
