Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum set a new club record on Sunday night as he has the most competitive wins in his first 200 appearances out of every player in the club’s history.

Wijnaldum made his 200th competitive appearance for Liverpool as the Reds beat Leicester 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to an own goal from Jonny Evans and strikes from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

It was his 133rd win in those 200 games, with Liverpool’s official account confirming that he tops the pile – ahead of the likes of Ian Rush and Gary Gillespie.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Wijnaldum’s performance against Leicester typified his Liverpool career – quiet but effective. He didn’t score a screamer or play the perfect pass to split open the defence and claim an assist, but he quietly went about his work and helped to boss the midfield for Liverpool.

He was given a 7.05 rating by WhoScored, as he completed 84% of his passes and made three interceptions to win the ball back off the opposition. The Dutchman also won one aerial battles and completed one dribble, whilst no Leicester players were able to dribble past him throughout the game. Not eye-catching statistics, but he did enough over the course of the game to contribute and make a difference – the small things add up.

Him setting this record for Liverpool perhaps goes to show just how important he is to Jurgen Klopp’s team. He adds balance to the midfield and allows Liverpool to control games, with the forward players then given the freedom to do what they do best. Hopefully, he can continue to add to his winning tally and possibly even reach 300 appearances if he signs a new contract!
