Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum is reportedly set to join Barcelona on a free transfer come the end of the season.
According to the Mirror, as cited by Anfield Watch’s Twitter account, Liverpool are reluctant to offer Wijnaldum more than a two-year extension.
Barcelona on the other hand have reportedly offered Wijnaldum a three-year deal.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Wijnaldum is 30 years of age, so we can understand why the club has not offered the Dutchman more than a two-year extension.
If Wijnaldum does leave, it might be a blessing in disguise for the club. It would be fair to assume that Liverpool would sign a midfielder if the Dutchman does depart Anfield.
It would also be fair to assume that Liverpool would sign a much younger midfielder than Wijnaldum. The Reds could potentially sign someone that could play in the club’s midfield for somewhere between 5-10 years.
We are looking forward to the summer transfer window to see which players sign for the club.
