Joël Matip is facing a race against time to be fit for Liverpool’s huge clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The centre-back has missed the last three games after going down with an abductor injury in the 1-1 draw against West Brom on December 27.

It was expected that the 29-year-old would be fit to return for the game against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side but Matip missed group training on Wednesday.

The Liverpool Echo have reported that the defender was undergoing his own specially-tailored fitness programme and has not necessarily suffered a setback in his return from injury.

Fabinho has been deputising at centre-back in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez this season while Jordan Henderson partnered the Brazilian in the last Premier League game against Southampton.

Naby Keïta also remains a doubt for Sunday after also missing training on Wednesday.
