Mohamed Salah aimed a dig at Jamie Carragher after he was accused of being “selfish’ for his comments over a new Liverpool contract.

The Liverpool star’s current deal expires at the end of the season and he has been vocal in his desire to be offered a new contract, revealing after last week’s win over Southampton that he was disappointed at the club for not opening talks.

Carragher questioned the timing of Salah going public with his frustration ahead of games against Real Madrid and Manchester City, both of which Liverpool have gone on to win.

Salah scored a penalty in the 2-0 victory over City at Anfield on Sunday and was named player of the match, having also provided the assist for Cody Gakpo’s opener.

Virgil van Dijk had also been in the running for the award, having impressed at the back. He was interviewed post-match alongside Salah and asked who had decided to name the Egyptian as player of the match.

Told it was Gary Neville, Van Dijk turned to Salah and joked: “Well done, I’m surprised that Carra didn’t give it to you.”

Salah responded: “Oh he wouldn’t. Never. He wouldn’t give it to me. I don’t want to talk about it.”

Van Dijk added: “No, we don’t listen to any of that.”

Salah has scored 13 goals to go with 11 assists in all competitions this season, playing a leading role in Liverpool’s flying start to the campaign. The Reds are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League and have won all five of their Champions League matches.

His future remains up in the air, as it does with Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold who are also out of contract next summer.

However, Carragher insisted that Salah’s public calls for contract talks to begin are not helpful to the club.

“The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season is not the future of Mo Salah,” Carragher said after Salah’s comments last week.

“It's not the future of Virgil van Dijk and it's not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League. That is more important than any of those players, and if he continues to put comments out, or his agent keeps putting tweets out, that's selfish. That's thinking about themselves and not the football club."
