Liverpool Mane admits he’s ‘sorry’ to score against former club Southampton | OneFootball

Liverpool striker Sadio Mane apologised to Southampton after his fine strike helped to condemn the Saints to a second defeat of the season.

After their gruelling 120 minute game against Chelsea in Istanbul in midweek, Liverpool travelled to the south coast to face a well-rested Southampton, who were looking to recover from their 3-0 hammering at the hands of Burnley on the opening day.

The Saints created a number of good chances throughout the game, but fell behind on the stroke of half-time thanks to a stunning strike from former striker Sadio Mane.

Roberto Firmino doubled the European champions’ lead, before former Reds striker Danny Ings made it a nervy finish for the visitors after he was the benefactor of a huge blunder from Liverpool’s Super Cup hero, Adrian.

Speaking after the game, Senegal international Mane apologised to his former employers for his part in inflicting their second successive defeat of the season, saying he still has ‘big respect’ for the South Coast club.

“I’m sorry it is against my old team and sorry I have to score but I’m wearing a Liverpool shirt now,” Mane told the BBC.

”Southampton was a very good step for me, I have big respect for this club. It is an amazing place.

”I learned a lot here and they are very nice people. But it is part of football and you have to deal with it.”
