Liverpool reportedly made an approach to sign Victor Osimhen in the summer but were put off by the player’s wage demands.

Osimhen’s future is up in the air after he failed to secure a move away from Napoli, with the Italian side leaving the 25-year-old out of their squad for the Serie A campaign.

The Nigerian held talks with Al-Hilal and Chelsea over a potential transfer, while there was also an approach from Arsenal earlier in the summer transfer window.

Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport have claimed that Liverpool lodged an enquiry into signing Osimhen during the summer window but baulked at the forward’s wage demands.

The striker’s salary expectations also saw a transfer to Chelsea stall, with the Blues having implemented a new wage structure at Stamford Bridge.

Al-Hilal, meanwhile, turned their attention to Brentford striker Ivan Toney and sealed the £40m transfer of the England international on August 30. The Saudi side had agreed a fee of around €70m (£58.9m) with Napoli.

Osimhen’s future is now in doubt and the forward will reassess his options when he returns from international duty, having been called up the Nigeria squad for September’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Rwanda.

He has not featured for Napoli all summer of in the club’s opening fixtures of the new campaign.
