Transfer News: Liverpool after Christoph Baumgartner as they seek Gini Wijnaldum replacement

As per a report by German outlet Kicker via Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are eyeing Christoph Baumgartner in the summer transfer window.

The Austrian midfielder currently plies his trade in Bundesliga with TSG Hoffenheim, where he is an important member of their midfield.

The 21-year-old made 41 appearances in all competitions and scored 9 times while assisting 7 goals for his side. Liverpool’s interest in him makes sense, especially if the current situation is considered. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Georginio Wijnaldum, an ever-present midfielder in Liverpool’s midfield, is set to join Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent (h/t Sky Sports). And the Reds would want to replace him one way or the other.

Baumgartner to Liverpool?

One option is to bring in midfielders in the summer. The Dutchman made 51 appearances for Liverpool this campaign and his availability was a blessing for Jurgen Klopp who saw players getting injured left, right, and centre at Anfield.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have the potential to step in and replace Wijnaldum in the starting XI. However, the duo’s injury record is pretty worrying.

Curtis Jones is another option, and Baumgartner, along with the Scouse midfielder, can work to fill the void left by the departing 30-year-old midfielder, Wijnaldum.

The report oddly mentions that Baumgartner ‘lacks class and experience’ but is a ‘mischief maker’. That doesn’t make for pleasant reading about a transfer target. But the jury should not be out for him until we see him at Anfield- if we manage to sign him, that is.

The Reds would be competing for silverware on four fronts next season, with a UEFA Champions League spot secured on the last day of the Premier League season. Given Liverpool’s injury record last season, there’s no way we cannot add to the squad.
