Liverpool will ‘continue to retain’ an interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 24-year-old only moved to the Midlands outfit from Sporting CP over the summer but was reportedly on the Reds’ radar prior to his transfer and will be closely monitored.

What is the latest news involving Nunes?

A recent report from Portuguese outlet UOL (via The Independent) has claimed that Liverpool have identified Nunes as an alternative target to Jude Bellingham.

The Borussia Dortmund star is believed to be at the top of Jurgen Klopp’s wish list as he looks to solve his engine room issues, although his £103 million valuation could prove to be a stumbling block.

Therefore, Nunes, who cost Wolves £42m last month, could prove to be a cheaper alternative to Bellingham if Liverpool are unwilling to break their transfer record.

Nunes penned a five-year contract upon his arrival at Molineux, yet the lure of Anfield could prove too much to turn down for the Portugal international.

The technically gifted star was linked with several European giants such as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain before he sealed his switch to Wolves, and he could finally make the leap to the top table next summer.

What has Jones said about Nunes?

Jones believes that Liverpool admired Nunes prior to his arrival in the Premier League but that Wolves’ current focus will be to transform their fortunes rather than retaining their prized assets.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Liverpool were actually interested in him before he joined Wolves.

“So, they will continue to retain an interest there, but Wolves can’t think about it right now – all their focus is on how this current group of players can turn around the season.”

How well has Nunes been playing?

Nunes has only made six appearances for Wolves so far, providing one assist, but his performances over the last year have been impressive.

As per FBref, the 6 foot ace has ranked in the 99th percentile for completed dribbles, 94th for progressive passes received, 91st for assists, and 83rd for clearances amongst his positional peers for the previous 12 months.

And Nunes has slotted in nicely alongside compatriots Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in the Wolves engine room in the opening weeks of the current campaign despite his side’s struggles.

Only time will tell if Liverpool do revive their interest in Nunes or whether their focus all of their attention and resources on bringing Bellingham to the club.
