Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp wants "sold out Anfield" for women's Merseyside derby | OneFootball

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to pack out Anfield stadium on Sunday when the women’s team host Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

The Reds earned promotion back into the Women’s Super League last season and have already made a huge statement.

They faced off against Chelsea in their first match of the campaign and left the reigning champions stunned after snatching all three points.

The next fixture will see Liverpool Women return to Anfield for the first time since 2019 and Klopp is rallying for supporters to get behind the team and fill the stands.

What did Klopp say?

“On Sunday, our Liverpool Women play against Everton — if that’s not enough of a reason to go to Anfield then I don’t know!” the long serving men’s team manager laughed in a recent club video.

Klopp then said he would “love to see a sold out Anfield” for the blockbuster clash.

“Maybe that’s a bit ambitious but if you don’t try, you’ll never get there.”

With the men’s team now on international break, the German admitted he will not be in the country this weekend and therefore won’t be able to attend the match, but has passed on his well wishes and support to Matt Beard and his team.

“I wish you the best of luck, a lot of fun, and three points against Everton. Let’s go, Reds!”

Liverpool vs Everton

The last time Liverpool hosted the women’s derby, they were greeted by a 23,500 strong crowd, marking a special moment for the team as they stepped onto the Anfield turf for the first time.

However, Reds fans will be hoping for a reprisal after Everton edged them out in a 1-0 win three years ago.

The reverse fixture of the derby was scheduled to take place at Goodison Park but the match was postponed due to storms in February 2020. The Merseyside rivals never did get to meet at Everton’s ground either, as the 2019/20 campaign was eventually curtailed due to Covid-19.

As a result, Liverpool were relegated on a points-per-game basis and spent two seasons in the Championship, before winning the title and earning promotion earlier this year.

When do Liverpool play at Anfield?

Beard and his Reds will return to action this Sunday, September 25th and will hope to continue their impressive start to the season.

Liverpool were able to snub Chelsea in their opening match after two penalties from Katie Stengel earned them a 2-1 win.

Everton however, were snubbed by West Ham away from home after Lisa Evans’ lone goal denied the Toffees a positive result.
