Reds do not need much but they have had great success with January deals in the past

Liverpool are flying high at the top of the Premier League under Arne Slot and it will be interesting to see if they choose to bolster their squad during the January transfer window.

The Reds have so far looked unstoppable and so it would be understandable if they decided against adding reinforcements in the middle of the season.

But injuries could change their mind and Liverpool have also shown a willingness to move in January if a great deal presents itself.

They moved early for Cody Gakpo in January 2023 and did the same 12 months earlier with Luis Diaz, when Tottenham were sniffing around the winger.

Top priority

The squad looks very settled and strong but another No6 would be welcome.

Liverpool were chasing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi in the summer, but he eventually stayed.

Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up since then, with Wataru Endo acting as cover.

Endo is not particularly suited to the way Slot likes his teams to play and he will also be turning 32 next month.

Greater competition for Gravenberch would be a boost, but Liverpool may wait until the summer.

What else they need

A new left-back is also likely to be on the agenda, if not this month then in the summer.

Andy Robertson has looked shaky at times this season and will turn 31 in March.

Kostas Tsimikas has been given the nod on occasion, but there are doubts as to whether he can cut it every week at the highest level.

On the other flank, if Real Madrid are able to lure Trent Alexander-Arnold away, a new right-back will be needed.

Possible ins

A fresh move for Zubimendi could materialise, if it emerges that the midfielder is now happy to leave Sociedad.

Liverpool have also been linked with Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White, who has excelled this season.

Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson has been touted as a replacement for Robertson and is enjoying a brilliant season.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who has caught the eye over the past six months, is another contender to come in and compete with Robertson.

Possible outs

Real Madrid are interested in Alexander-Arnold, who will be out of contract at the end of the season.

Liverpool have already turned down an approach from the Spanish giants and have no plans to let him go in January, with their aim to get him to sign a new deal.

Tyler Morton and Jayden Danns could go out on loan.
