Liverpool are working on a deal to sign teenager Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle this summer, according to Goal.

The 17-year-old is being pursued by a host of top clubs, including Bayern Munich, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, after playing 16 times for the Zwolle senior side last season under Jaap Stam.

Sampdoria bid £2.25million for the centre-back in January, but this approach was rejected by Zwolle at the time.

Liverpool are eager to wrap up the signing of van den Berg as soon as possible, with the Reds recruitment team confident that “significant progress” has been made in the deal over the last few days.

Van den Berg is considered to be at a similar level to Joe Gomez of four years ago and is expected to push for a first team place in the near future, though he will slot into the under-18 and under-23 teams at the Academy initially.

He has already played for the Dutch under-19 side on three occasions, even finding the net once during the UEFA U-19 championship qualifying rounds.

Liverpool hope van den Berg can follow the same pathway as fellow Dutchman Ki-Jana Hoever, who joined the Reds from Ajax last summer and made his first team debut against Wolves in the FA Cup in January.
