In a recent report, Foot Mercato claimed that Liverpool have set their sights on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. It has been revealed that the Reds are eyeing a move to bring the French forward to Merseyside in this summer transfer period.

Mateta’s Impressive Numbers In English Football

Mateta enjoyed a good run of form at the London club recently as he managed to put in a string of impressive displays for them in the Premier League. The 28-year-old banged in 17 goals and secured four assists in 46 matches for Crystal Palace last season in multiple competitions.

The Sevran-born talent deserves some credit for averaging 2.31 shots per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He kept 42.6% of his attempts on target. However, Mateta needs to improve his ball distribution after completing 65.1% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via fbref.com).

Mateta’s current contract at Selhurst Park will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Liverpool would have to make a big offer if they want to acquire the services of the French forward this off-season.

What Will Mateta Bring To Liverpool?

Mateta excels at finding some space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to set up a few inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and is usually quite clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty area.

The French sensation has proven himself to be a capable finisher in the Premier League. Standing at 1.92m, he can use his powerful frame to win some 50-50 aerial duels but needs to figure out a way to improve his link-up play up top.

We can expect Mateta to bring more quality and depth to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s attack. He is good enough to serve as an ideal replacement for Darwin Nunez at the Merseyside club.

At 28, Mateta is still playing in his prime which makes him a great option for the Reds to pursue this summer. He has already got some valuable experience in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Anfield. Mateta might even help the Reds compete for some major honours over the next few years.
