Liverpool have been ‘doing background work’ on Jude Bellingham for a prolonged period and that could ‘give them an edge’ as Jurgen Klopp looks to lure the Borussia Dortmund star to Anfield, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The Reds shattered their transfer record when they spent £85million on Darwin Nunez during the summer, but Klopp will be given the opportunity to welcome further reinforcements to Merseyside in January.
It is understood that Liverpool were interested in signing Bellingham before the transfer deadline earlier this month, but they were unable to prise the central midfielder away from Dortmund.
Despite that setback, the Reds are reportedly making strong progress in their attempts to get a deal in place ahead of a move to Anfield at the end of the season.
Bellingham is valued at close to £132million by Dortmund and meeting that figure would result in him becoming the most expensive British footballer in history.
However, Liverpool are not the only Premier League club fighting for the 19-year-old’s signature as Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have also joined the race.
Bellingham, who has been described as ‘special’, is currently on international duty after earning a call-up to England’s squad for the Nations League clashes with Italy and Germany.
O’Rourke believes Liverpool have a battle on their hands when it comes to attempting to negotiate a deal for Bellingham.
However, the journalist feels the Reds are at the front of the queue if a move away from Dortmund is suddenly on the cards as they have already been doing their research on the teenager.
O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s going to be a difficult race to win to sign Jude Bellingham.
“But Liverpool, it seems, have been doing their background work now for a while and they’ll be hoping that might give them an edge if Bellingham does leave Dortmund.”

Although Bellingham has never competed in the Premier League, he has shown his class while on Dortmund’s books and chalked up 31 goal contributions in 100 appearances.
Real Madrid star David Alaba has showered the former Birmingham City man with praise recently, labelling him ‘one of the greatest midfield talents in the world’.
Bellingham was described as ‘exceptional’ by Pep Guardiola after Dortmund lost to Manchester City in their Champions League group stage clash earlier this month, so it is clear he has an abundance of talent which would excite the Liverpool faithful.
