Liverpool handed SECOND title boost by £75m star transfer target | OneFootball

Liverpool have received ANOTHER Premier League title boost from a player they tried and failed to sign last summer.

Liverpool will be smiling heading into their game with Wolves on Saturday after seeing Manchester City drop more Premier League points. After drawing with Arsenal last Sunday, they've now settled for a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United.

City took the lead here through Josko Gvardiol and were ahead at the break. However, Anthony Gordon capitalised on a mistake at the back to race in and win a penalty in the second half.

Gordon then stepped up himself to take it and equalised for the Magpies. It finished 1-1 and City are down four points in two games.

Liverpool have a chance to go top of the table at Wolves, then, and they can thank Gordon - a boyhood Red who they actually tried to sign in the summer. The Reds put £75m on the table, allegedly, only for a move to break down.

The agreement came about because Newcastle were up against the Premier League spending rules deadline. Liverpool looked to take advantage, signing Gordon and sending Joe Gomez the other way for £45m.

Newcastle found other ways to overcome their problems and the deal broke down. But it seems Gordon has still managed to make an impact on Liverpool's title dreams.

Gordon's not the only one

And bizarrely, this is a similar situation to the one we saw with Arsenal. That featured Riccardo Calafiori equalising against City - another player Liverpool tried to sign in the summer.

There's no suggestion that things went as far as an offer in that one, but Liverpool are finding that even their attempted signings are causing City problems and blowing this title race open.

Now, let's hope the actual Liverpool players can do the same later this season.
