Liverpool have granted permission to assistant coach John Heitinga to hold talks with Ajax about becoming the club’s new head coach.
Heitinha joined Liverpool last summer to form part of the coaching staff under compatriot Arne Slot. The 41-year-old’s appointment came after previous spells working at Ajax and under David Moyes at West Ham United.
He helped Slot guide Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2024/25, ending their debut season with league success.
Ajax have now made an approach to appoint Heitinga as their new head coach, following Francesco Farioli’s decision to step down from the role. Farioli quit Ajax after just one season, following the club’s collapse in the Eredivisie title race.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations are advanced for Heitinga to replace the Italian at the Johan Cruyff Arena. It would represent a first permanent senior role for the Dutchman, who briefly had a spell as interim manager of Ajax in 2023.
Heitinga made 218 appearances for Ajax across two spells during his playing career, alongside stints in the Premier League with Everton and Fulham.
Liverpool have begun the process of identifying a replacement for Heitinga with a move to Amsterdam probable as things stand.
