The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international left the field just before the hour mark at Prenton Park with Megan Campbell coming on in her place.
Kiernan’s injury has been assessed by the Liverpool medical team and the club have today provided a fitness update via their official website which confirms that the forward will require surgery and will be sidelined for several months.
The news is a bitter blow for both Kiernan and Liverpool. After joining the club in summer 2021, Kiernan netted 13 goals in 22 games as The Reds won last season’s Barclays Women’s Championship title and promotion back to the top tier.
Liverpool enjoyed a dream start to life back in the Barclays Women’s Super League with a gritty 2-1 victory over Chelsea. The Merseyside club were 1-0 down at the time that Kiernan came off but two Katie Stengel penalties saw Matt Beard’s side turn the game on its head and collect the three points.
This weekend sees Liverpool contest a Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield. That match will see forward Kiernan begin her period cheering the team on from the sidelines. Three points and derby day bragging rights would be a small consolation for the player following her injury blow.
