Liverpool stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points, but not without facing a fight at St Mary’s. Southampton, bottom of the league, proved a tough challenge, taking the lead in the second half before defensive mistakes and individual errors allowed Liverpool to turn the game around. A late penalty from Mohamed Salah sealed a vital 3-2 win for Jürgen Klopp’s side, leaving them in a commanding position ahead of next week’s clash with champions Manchester City at Anfield.
As has been the case throughout the season, Southampton’s promising performances were marred by individual mistakes, with Liverpool capitalising on every opportunity. It was a sluggish start for the hosts, and after 30 minutes, their sloppy play at the back led to the opening goal. Flynn Downes’ poor pass inside his own penalty area allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to intercept and curl home a fine shot, giving Liverpool the lead. The Reds’ clinical finishing once again underlined their ability to punish teams for defensive lapses.

For Southampton, the equaliser just before the break was a painful blow, especially considering the nature of the error. Virgil van Dijk, normally so reliable, was dispossessed in midfield, which led to Tyler Dibling advancing into the box. Andy Robertson fouled Dibling in the area, and after a VAR check, a penalty was awarded. Despite Caoimhin Kelleher saving Adam Armstrong’s penalty, the striker reacted quickest to score the rebound, much to the frustration of the Liverpool goalkeeper and their fans.
The second half started with Southampton looking dangerous and they took a shock lead in the 56th minute. Mateus Fernandes finished a superb move involving Dibling and Armstrong, which put the hosts 2-1 up. It was a well-executed goal, but Southampton’s defensive vulnerabilities soon resurfaced, allowing Liverpool to respond.
The equaliser came just after the hour mark, when Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy made a costly error. Trying to collect Ryan Gravenberch’s long ball, McCarthy was caught out of position, gifting Mohamed Salah an easy chance to level the scores. The goal was a reminder of the fragility in Southampton’s defence, and Liverpool capitalised ruthlessly, shifting the momentum back in their favour.

Liverpool continued to press for the winner, and their persistence paid off in the 83rd minute. Yuki Sugawara, under no pressure, handled the ball in the penalty area, giving Liverpool a chance to snatch all three points. Salah, who had been involved in both previous goals, made no mistake from the spot, confidently converting the penalty to give Liverpool a 3-2 lead.
The late drama capped off a thrilling encounter, with Southampton unable to hold on for a point despite their best efforts. The victory for Liverpool was hard-fought, but it demonstrated the resilience and composure that Klopp’s team has shown in tight situations this season.
