With Liverpool basking in the glow of their first Premier League title since 2020, optimism is flooding Anfield. The arrival of Arne Slot has already proven to be transformative, and now, reports suggest that another major change could be imminent — the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s prodigious midfielder, Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool are believed to have submitted an official bid for the 22-year-old playmaker, with Fabrizio Romano and Lewis Steele both hinting that the deal could be wrapped up by mid-June. If confirmed, the move would represent a club-record signing north of £100 million. Yet, according to former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann, this investment would be entirely justified.
Hamann, a Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005 and now a respected pundit in Germany, is full of praise for Wirtz. Speaking to Sky Germany (via Bild), he explained why the young German’s talents are so well-suited to Slot’s energetic and fluid style.
“Florian Wirtz makes others better,” Hamann stated emphatically. “I believe he’s a player who can play anywhere. That’s why he might have had the opportunity to go to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.”

It is a trait that fits perfectly into Liverpool’s existing system. Wirtz has the technical brilliance, vision and intelligence to act as a link between midfield and attack — potentially becoming the kind of catalyst that elevates an already dangerous frontline. In a side boasting pace and dynamism from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz, a creative presence like Wirtz would not only complement but enhance Liverpool’s offensive arsenal.
Interestingly, Hamann also revealed that Liverpool’s handling of the transfer has left a positive impression on Wirtz’s camp, particularly his family. That level of diligence may have swayed the player’s preference towards Merseyside over Munich, with Hamann noting: “He’s made a very good decision.”
Another factor could be the presence of Jeremie Frimpong, who is also reportedly on his way to Anfield. The Dutch full-back already has a strong on-pitch relationship with Wirtz from their time at Leverkusen. That familiarity might smooth the adaptation process, both on and off the pitch.
“Liverpool has fast players: Jeremie Frimpong is also moving to Liverpool, and Wirtz already knows him very well,” said Hamann. The suggestion is clear — Wirtz would not be arriving cold but stepping into a team that suits his strengths, surrounded by known quantities.
Of course, expectations will be immense. A nine-figure fee, the Premier League spotlight and a fanbase eager for sustained success — all eyes would be on Wirtz from day one. But Hamann believes that the young German is more than ready to handle the weight of the red shirt.
“I can’t wait for him to wear the red jersey for the first time,” he added. “I believe that after just a few weeks, he’ll be a fan favourite and can and will achieve great things at Liverpool.”
That enthusiasm is grounded in more than just sentiment. Wirtz’s numbers from this past season — 16 goals and 15 assists — point to a player whose end product matches the hype. With over 190 senior appearances and nearly 30 caps for Germany, he is no stranger to pressure.
Assuming the deal is finalised, Wirtz would join Liverpool at a crucial moment — a title defence, a Champions League campaign and the second chapter of Slot’s reign. His arrival could provide the spark that turns Liverpool from contenders into a truly dominant force, both domestically and in Europe.
For now, Liverpool supporters can only wait — but if Hamann’s prediction proves true, it won’t be long before Florian Wirtz becomes not just a headline signing, but a player the Kop genuinely falls in love with.
