Liverpool fans were caught up in a rumour of an equaliser at Manchester City late into victory over Wolves.

City's win against Aston Villa saw them finish the day Premier League champions - a point ahead of the Reds.

The Daily Mail says in the 85th minute at Anfield, it appears somebody started a false rumour that Steven Gerrard's side had indeed made it 3-3 and the Reds were bound for glory.

It was captured on the Sky Sports coverage and came just after Mohamed Salah had put Liverpool ahead.

Cheering started in the stands and close-up shots of the crowd showed fans hugging, clapping and celebrating as they believed Villa had scored.

It was even picked up on the commentary with Rob Hawthorne saying: "A cheer going around though we know not why because Manchester City, to our knowledge, are still leading by three goals to two.

"I'm not sure if a false rumour has spread around here like wildfire."

Even Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp picked up on it as he embraced Thiago Alcantara on the touchline, although that could have been sympathy for the injury that forced him off the field.

On the Liverpool subs bench, however, we can see Takumi Minamino, clearly better informed about the City score, urging everyone to calm down.

Klopp later admitted: "I can imagine it was much worse for the people who were at home and [watching on] the telly, wherever over the world, all the Liverpool fans when Aston Villa are 2-0 up and you think, 'OK, wow, that could really be.' I was not really aware of it, in my mind it was 1-0 and even they could have scored an equaliser, I didn't know that. I heard now all the story only after the game.

"There was one moment when it was first 3-2, I heard 3-2 and then it was for a second, I don't know who started it, I thought they equalised again. It was a good moment but it was only a second and then everybody went, 'No, nothing happened.' With all the things I would have preferred actually they [City] were 5-0 up after 10 minutes and then you play the game and it's fine. It makes it of course more difficult."
