The final day of the 2021/22 Premier League season was sporting entertainment of the highest order.

There was so much on the line going into the last round of games, including the title itself.

Manchester City knew they would have to beat Aston Villa to get their hands on the trophy, something which looked unlikely for quite some time.

In the 75th minute of play at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s side trailed 2-0 after shock goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho.

But by the 81st minute, City were 3-2 ahead. A brace from Ilkay Gundogan and a marvellous strike by Rodri completed the quickest of comebacks.

It came at such a rapid pace that Liverpool players were completely unaware of what had unfolded in Manchester when they took the lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mohamed Salah was the scorer of the goal that made it 2-1 and the Egyptian forward celebrated as if it were a title-winning strike.

However, Liverpool’s joy quickly turned to pain when a fan in the stands informed the players that City were in fact 3-2 ahead.

Joel Matip was the man who asked what the score was and fan footage of the incident by the touchline has now emerged.

Matip was desperate to know whether Salah’s goal had put them top of the table, although the answer he received certainly wasn’t the one he or the team wanted to hear.

But while last Sunday was ultimately a bit of a downer for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp’s side can be hugely proud of their efforts.

The fact there was even a title race at all after City’s dominant start represents a huge achievement by the Merseyside outfit.

They will now switch their attention to Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris, where they will attempt to win a treble after lifting both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
