Liverpool will have to pay a ‘massive’ price if they are genuinely interested in signing Youri Tielemans this summer from Leicester City.

The Belgian midfielder had an excellent year last season for Leicester City with him helping them challenge for the Champions League spots and, of course, sealing the FA Cup with a superb goal in the final against Chelsea.

Clearly, he is a player of quality and Liverpool reporter Paul Gorst has suggested that he would cost a great deal if the Reds wanted to sign him, if there does end up being a genuine interest from the club in getting him to join.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said:

“Generally if the link is from the player’s homeland there’s a school of thought that the info is coming from his camp, but I haven’t actually seen a solid link myself beyond the usual rumours that do the rounds. I certainly think he is a player Liverpool like, he has quality and at the age of 24 is at the ideal age. A real issue would be Leicester under no pressure to sell, so price would be massive. That said, I’ve not been made aware of any genuine, active interest at this stage. I believe a Wijnaldum replacement is needed though.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Tielemans would be an excellent signing but it is certainly hard to see Liverpool getting him for anything less than a monumental fee.

Leicester aren’t exactly strapped for cash and he has several years left on his contract there, so they have a strong bargaining position for any negotiations.

If he has a good European Championships, too, the fee for him will only go up further.
