Liverpool face League Cup expulsion amid Pedro Chirivella eligibility concerns | OneFootball

Liverpool face the possibility of being thrown out of the League Cup amid concerns over the eligibility of Pedro Chirivella, who came off the bench against MK Dons.

The Athletic’s James Pearce reports that the EFL have launched an investigation into Chirivella’s eligibility, after his appearance on Wednesday.

Liverpool needed an international transfer certificate from the FA to facilitate the transfer of Chirivella back from Spanish second division side Extremadura. They applied for the ITC back in July, and they believed the issue had been dealt with.

It appears that wasn’t the case, though which party is at fault here is not yet confirmed.

If Liverpool are found guilty, they could be expelled from the competition, but they could also simply receive a fine. Sunderland were only fined after a similar situation in 2014.

This is all relevant to Arsenal, of course, as they’re currently facing a trip to Anfield in the next round.

Last year, Arsenal’s u18 side had something comparable happen in the FA Youth Cup. Their quarter-final opponents Reading were charged with fielding an underage player, and Reading were replaced by Colchester United in the competition.

If the EFL decided on the same punishment for Liverpool, Arsenal may be taking a trip to Milton Keynes instead.
