Liverpool have been linked with a number of midfielders this summer, but few saw them moving for Real Sociedad and Spain star Martin Zubimendi.
Formerly a target for Arsenal and Barcelona, their interest cooled under the understanding that he was not interested in a move away from the Reale Arena. Indeed both decided to look at his midfield partner Mikel Merino, who is out of contract next summer, and ready to make a move. The Gunners are currently in talks with La Real for Merino.
Now Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Liverpool are ‘exploring a move’ for Zubimendi. The 25-year-old has a €60m release clause, and a contract until 2027. Romano revealed that talks were expected to begin between Liverpool, the player and the club. His information has since been corroborated by The Times, The Athletic and others.
If Liverpool can convince Zubimendi to leave Donostia-San Sebastian, it would be more than value to activate his release clause, and something of a coup. So far the local midfielder has resisted outside temptations with no shortage of top clubs enquiring, but it would be a huge blow if Imanol Alguacil were to lose Zubimendi and Merino in the same window.
