Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was the subject of a controversial tweet posted by Domino’s Pizza following Monday night’s 3-1 defeat away at Brentford.
Nunez, not for the first time since his £85 million summer move from Benfica, missed a number of chances to score against the Bees.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reduced the deficit to 2-1 early in the 50th minute following a tough first half for Jurgen Klopp’s men, but Bryan Mbeumo wrapped up all three points for the hosts with Brentford’s third goal with five minutes left on the clock.
The result leaves Liverpool sixth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, who have played one game fewer than last season’s Champions League finalists.
Nunez has managed to score five Premier League goals in 13 appearances so far. The Uruguay international has nine goals in all competitions after his first 22 games for the Merseyside outfit.
While some fans and pundits alike are convinced that it’s a mere matter of time before Nunez, who appears to possess all of the tools required to become an elite-level striker, begins scoring goals for fun – the jury is still out for many others.
Perhaps due to Nunez’s astronomical price tag, rival fans on social media have been quick to jump on his back at every opportunity since his arrival at Anfield.
Domino’s Pizza decided it was their turn to jump on the Nunez-mocking bandwagon following Liverpool’s defeat at Brentford, tweeting a photo of the Uruguayan alongside the caption: “Sorry if we’ve missed any orders tonight, we’ve just had this guy start.”
Ouch.
While many found Domino’s tweet funny, others were far less amused.
In fact, there’s been a bit of a backlash in the comments, with some criticising the pizza restaurant chain.
Nunez isn’t the only Premier League footballer to receive this type of treatment and he certainly won’t be the last.
The likes of Jesse Lingard, Harry Maguire and Timo Werner have been through similar in recent years.
The best way for Nunez to silence his critics is to respond on the pitch – and there’s no doubt that he’ll have the complete backing of the Anfield crowd as he attempts to build his confidence.
