Liverpool can only have limited alternative targets to Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham due to his quality, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Fabrizio Romano has previously informed GiveMeSport that the 19-year-old is the ‘main target’ for the Reds as Jurgen Klopp looks to revamp his engine room.

Liverpool transfer news – Midfielder

The race for Bellingham’s signature is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested transfer tussles of next summer, although Dortmund haven’t given up hope of retaining his services.

Nevertheless, the Bundesliga giants are said to value the England international at around €150 million (£131.6m), and he is not short of potential suitors.

A recent report from The Athletic has claimed that Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid have joined Liverpool in the race for Bellingham’s signature.

The quoted fee for Bellingham would make him the Anfield outfit’s record signing by some distance, though, raising doubts over their ability to afford him.

What has Jones said about Liverpool?

When asked if Liverpool have a backup option to Bellingham lined up of a similar quality, Jones informed GiveMeSport that there ‘aren’t too many players available on that level’.

He said: “There aren’t too many players available on that level. So obviously, that whittles things down straight away.

“I mean, how important was it to them that he was young? How important is it to them that he’s English? How important is it that he’s just one of the best midfielders in the world? How many of those boxes need to be ticked?”

Who else could Liverpool sign?

Romano has stated in a column for CaughtOffside that Ajax star Mohammed Kudus has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

It’s believed that there is ‘nothing concrete’ in regards to the speculation just yet, though, but the 22-year-old’s outstanding form for club and country may make him an exciting prospect.

Alternatively, reliable Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo is another player of interest.

The Ecuador international is also said to be attracting the attention of Manchester United after putting in some eye-catching displays at the Amex Stadium over the last year or so.

Both Kudus and Caicedo are currently starring for their respective countries at the World Cup and will surely be hoping to showcase their credentials on the biggest stage of all.
