The report claims Pellegrini has not accepted Roma’s contract extension offers and the club could cash in on him this summer to avoid losing him on a free in 2022.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

The 24-year-old has been in impressive form for Roma this season. He has averaged an eye-catching WhoScored rating of 7.20 in the Serie A, with five goals and six assists in 27 starts for Roma, whilst proving his versatility by playing as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder and left-forward. This suggests that he could be a solid addition to Liverpool’s squad and offer Jurgen Klopp a multitude of options in terms of how he could use him as he is capable of excelling in several roles.

Pellegrini’s contract expires in 2022, as the report states, and that could allow Liverpool to land him for a bargain price this summer. Transfermarkt values the Italian at £33.30m and Liverpool could pay less than that as Roma face the prospect of getting £0 if they do not cash in on him now. Gini Wijnaldum’s deal expires this summer and the Dutchman appears set to leave on a free transfer, potentially opening the door for Pellegrini to walk in and take his place in the squad.

However, Pellegrini could be one of a number of midfield targets Liverpool are looking at. With Wijnaldum possibly leaving the club, Liverpool could be scouting midfielders across the globe and Pellegrini may be one of a hundred players they have cast their eyes over. This means that it is impossible to say whether or not the Italian is a top target for Liverpool at this moment in time.
