Liverpool are considering rivalling Newcastle in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Newcastle are pushing ahead with plans to sign Trafford with the Magpies having approached relegated Burnley over a deal worth in the region of £15m.

The 21-year-old endured a tough first season in the Premier League after joining Burnley from Manchester City last summer, though remains a player with huge potential.

Trafford was the hero of England’s success at the u-21 European Championship in 2023 with a stoppage-time penalty save from Abel Ruiz helping the Young Lions to a 1-0 win over Spain in the final.

Newcastle are keen to bring Trafford in to provide competition for Nick Pope at St James’ Park, though The Football Faithful have been told that Liverpool could make a late bid and rival their interest.

Liverpool are expected to allow Caoimhin Kelleher to leave in search of a first-team role this summer, amid interest in the 25-year-old from several Premier League clubs.

Trafford’s arrival would provide cover for Alisson Becker and improve the club’s homegrown quota, which has been reduced following the exits of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last season, while Nat Phillips and Kelleher are expected to leave permanently this summer.

The Reds had been interested in Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, though the 26-year-old – who was named Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper in 2023-24 – is nearing a move to Juventus in a €20m deal.
