Liverpool are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window, with reports suggesting they could offer Darwin Núñez in a player-plus-cash deal for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. According to Football Insider, the Reds are keen to bolster their attack under Arne Slot, and the Swede has been identified as a top target.
With Liverpool in pole position for the Premier League title, the squad overhaul under Slot is beginning to take shape. However, prising Isak away from St James’ Park will be no easy feat, especially with Newcastle valuing their star striker at over £100m.
Despite Liverpool’s success this season, there has been no standout performer leading the line. Núñez, while offering pace and energy, has failed to deliver consistently, registering just four goals and two assists in 20 league appearances. His limited starts under Slot indicate that the new manager is not fully convinced he fits into his long-term vision.
The reported £60m valuation of Núñez suggests that Liverpool believe they can use him as a makeweight in negotiations for Isak. Whether Newcastle would entertain such a swap, however, is another matter entirely. With Isak contracted until 2028, Eddie Howe’s side hold the upper hand.
Newcastle remain in a strong negotiating position. They have no urgent financial need to sell, and Isak’s performances have only enhanced his value. Liverpool are not alone in their admiration, with Arsenal and other top clubs also interested in the former Real Sociedad forward.

Isak, 25, has been open to a move to Anfield, according to previous reports, but Newcastle will not let him go easily. If Liverpool are unwilling to match their asking price, it may take more than Núñez and cash to convince them to part ways with their prized asset.
Liverpool’s transfer strategy will be shaped by other key uncertainties. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all approaching the final months of their contracts. If any of them leave on a free transfer, it will complicate Liverpool’s summer planning.
Replacing Salah’s goals, Van Dijk’s leadership and Alexander-Arnold’s creativity would require significant investment. If the club cannot generate fees from their potential departures, they may need to sell other squad players to raise funds.
With Liverpool looking to redefine their attack under Slot, this summer represents their biggest transfer window in years. If they are serious about signing Isak, they will need to make an offer that Newcastle cannot refuse.
For a Liverpool fan, the prospect of signing Isak is undoubtedly exciting. He is a clinical finisher, technically gifted, and well-suited to the Premier League. But does this deal make sense?
Firstly, Newcastle hold all the cards. Isak is under contract until 2028 and has been one of their standout players. Would they really swap him for Núñez, who has struggled for consistency at Liverpool? It seems unlikely unless Liverpool add significant cash on top.
Secondly, there is the question of whether Isak is the right fit for Slot’s system. Liverpool’s attack has thrived on fluidity, with multiple players interchanging positions. Isak is more of a traditional striker, which raises questions about how he would integrate alongside Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota.
And then there’s the financial aspect. If Salah, Van Dijk, or Alexander-Arnold leave for free, Liverpool will need to prioritise multiple areas in the market. Spending over £100m on one player might not be the most strategic move, especially with midfield and defence also requiring reinforcements.
While Isak is a top-class forward, Liverpool must be smart about their summer business. Trading Núñez for him feels optimistic at best—but if the club can make the numbers work, this could be the statement signing Slot needs.
