Liverpool have confirmed that club captain Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery on the groin injury he sustained during last weekend’s defeat to Everton.
Henderson was substituted during the first half of the disappointing 2-0 defeat to their Merseyside rivals, the midfielder joining the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez on the sidelines and adding to an already extensive injury list for the Premier League champions.
The England international has featured at centre-back in recent weeks following a succession of injuries to the Reds’ defensive options, and Jurgen Klopp will now be without the 30-year-old for an extended period following the confirmation of an operation.
Liverpool have released a statement on the club’s official website confirming Henderson has undergone successful surgery, though no specific timeframe has been placed on the midfielder’s return with the star set to be ‘closely monitored’ by the Reds’ medical staff.
Henderson is expected to be out until at least after March’s international break and England manager Gareth Southgate will now be keeping a close eye on his progress ahead of this summer’s European Championships.
Jurgen Klopp will also need to find a new solution at centre-back with winter window signing Ben Davies in contention to feature at Sheffield United this weekend, whilst the German will also hope to be boosted by Fabinho’s return from injury with the Brazilian nearing a return to action.
Liverpool travel to the struggling Blades on Sunday evening looking to arrest a run of four consecutive Premier League defeats, their dismal form having seen the injury-hit champions drop to sixth and five points adrift of the Champions League places.
