It was not a question of if, but when. Liverpool have landed one of the most dynamic right-sided players in Europe, completing the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutch international, fresh off a historic season in Germany, has put pen to paper at the AXA Training Centre following a successful medical.
Frimpong’s arrival signals intent from Arne Slot, who, in his debut season, guided Liverpool to the Premier League title. As the new era continues to take shape at Anfield, the recruitment of the 24-year-old underlines the club’s strategy of combining tactical energy with technical precision.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Frimpong made no secret of his enthusiasm about joining the Reds:“It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer.“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.’“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

This kind of directness might be refreshing, but it also speaks to the clarity with which Frimpong views this stage in his career. After helping Leverkusen dominate domestically, his ambition now aligns with a club equally determined to stay at the summit.
Frimpong arrives on the back of a campaign that saw Bayer Leverkusen achieve the extraordinary. Not only did they lift the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, they did so with a 51-game unbeaten streak that only came to an end in the Europa League final. His numbers speak for themselves: 190 appearances, 30 goals and 44 assists during his time in Germany.
Twice named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season, Frimpong has established himself as more than just a wing-back. He’s a tempo-setter, a vertical threat and a relentless ball-carrier. For Liverpool, whose high-intensity philosophy demands relentless pressing and quick transitions, he is more than a good fit — he is a player who can evolve the system.
His past experiences have been equally rich in silverware. Starting out in Manchester City’s youth ranks, Frimpong made his first senior impact at Celtic, where he lifted three trophies before moving to Germany. He also debuted for the Netherlands in 2023 and has already collected 12 caps and a goal at international level.
It is no coincidence that Frimpong’s arrival comes under a manager known for getting the best out of high-octane footballers. Arne Slot’s style — a hybrid of pressing intensity and intelligent possession play — appears tailored to the Dutchman’s strengths.
“I spoke to the manager a few times,” said Frimpong. “He sounds very positive. He says I can bring a lot of energy and my qualities, my speed.“Especially when a manager is talking positively about you, it gives you very good confidence that he believes in you. I’ve had good conversations with him.”
It wasn’t just Slot’s words that resonated. Frimpong added, “Even when I was at [the] national team, some of the Feyenoord boys would tell me about him and be like, ‘He’s the best coach I’ve ever had.’ Things like this.“So, I’ve always heard good things about the coach. Now he’s going to be my coach, so I’m excited for that.”
Frimpong’s squad number will be confirmed later this summer, but his role seems more defined. With the future of Liverpool’s right flank entering a new chapter, the Dutchman may offer an alternative dynamic to Trent Alexander-Arnold, or potentially operate further forward in wide areas.
Either way, the signing marks another intelligent acquisition by a Liverpool side not content with standing still. With their new Premier League crown, the challenge is now sustaining success — and players like Frimpong will be central to that mission.
