Liverpool have officially signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million, making him the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Wirtz joins the Premier League champions for an initial fee of £100m, with a further £16m to be paid in performance-based add-ons.

The German international is Liverpool’s second signing of the summer, reuniting with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who joined earlier in the transfer window.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Wirtz gathered pace in recent weeks, with Bayern Munich previously interested, but the player had already made it clear that his preference was to move to England.

Wirtz, who was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023–24, bagged 18 goals and 20 assists during Leverkusen’s historic title-winning campaign.

He followed that up with another strong season last term, tallying 16 goals and 15 assists as Leverkusen finished second and reached the Champions League last 16.

Since making his Bundesliga debut at the age of 17, Wirtz has developed into one of the most complete attacking midfielders in European football.

Speaking after completing his move, Wirtz said he was ‘really happy’ to begin a new chapter in the Premier League and is eager to help Liverpool build on their recent title success.

Manager Arne Slot played a key role in convincing Wirtz to join, outlining a vision that places the creative midfielder at the heart of a refreshed, fluid frontline.

Wirtz’s versatility makes him a natural fit for Liverpool’s evolving system, offering an option through the middle or on either flank.

The signing represents a major statement from Liverpool’s hierarchy, who rarely move for ready-made stars but were willing to make an exception for one of Europe’s elite young talents.

Wirtz will officially link up with his new teammates when pre-season training begins in July, as Liverpool prepare for another tilt at silverware.
