According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are “close” to signing Alexis Mac Allister as he is “expected to bid farewell” to Brighton supporters this weekend.

Mac Allister has enjoyed a remarkable season for Brighton and Argentina. He won the World Cup in the winter and he has helped the Seagulls qualify for the Europa League.

The midfielder was one of the standout players at the World Cup and he has been involved in 15 goals for Brighton across all competitions in 2022/23.

His form has caught the attention of Brighton’s rivals. He is among Liverpool’s main summer targets and he’s understood to be valued at £70m. The Reds are in the market for two or three midfielders and Mac Allister is expected to be one of their signings.

Romano took to Twitter on Friday evening to confirm that “Mac Allister is expected to bid his farewell to Brighton fans” after their final game of the season this weekend.

He is “prepared to leave in June” and Liverpool are the “frontrunners” in the race to sign him. They are “close to completing the deal” and they are now “waiting on the final details”.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is another player on Liverpool’s radar. He is out of contract in 2024 and he could be sold this summer.

Man Utd and Arsenal are also being linked with the England international so it will not be easy for Liverpool to sign him.

But Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher “would be delighted” if his former club bought Mac Allister and Mount.

“Mason Mount is a funny one, in that people always seem a little bit down on him for whatever reason. I’ve never got it, I’m a huge fan,” Carragher told The Anfield Wrap.

“He’s a Champions League winner. I really like him. He’s got the energy to press, he’d provide a greater goal threat from midfield than we have from Jordan [Henderson] in that position right now.

“Every top manager who’s been at Chelsea has picked him. He plays for England and I think the club have also got to be thinking about that homegrown situation.”

Carragher added: “If we brought Mac Allister and Mason Mount in, I’d be delighted with that. I definitely want us to bring a defensive midfield player in as well, because Mount and Mac Allister are more offensive midfield players.

“I don’t think our problem is going forward, our problem is defensively. If we’re gonna get back to where we wanna be, which is challenging Manchester City and challenging for big trophies, we’ve got to sort ourselves out defensively because that’s been the biggest problem this season.”
