Liverpool are braced for being without captain Jordan Henderson for an extended period after he limped out of the Merseyside Derby defeat on Saturday.

The game at Anfield saw the England international once again lining up at centre-back, with the likes of Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho all currently on the sidelines in what’s been an injury-ridden campaign for the champions.

After going a goal down to Everton in the opening few minutes, Liverpool‘s woes were then compounded by seeing Henderson limp off midway through the first half, to add another name to their growing injury list.

A late penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson ultimately sealed all three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, while the defeat saw the Reds suffer a fourth straight home loss at Anfield in the league, the first time that has happened since 1923.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side already enduring a dismal title defence, the Mail is reporting that their woes have been compounded by the news that Henderson is set to face a ‘significant’ spell on the sidelines.

The 30-year-old is almost certain to be ruled out of Liverpool’s Champions League, last-16 second-leg tie against RB Leipzig in midweek, while he could also be a doubt for England’s World Cup qualifying fixtures at the end of March.

The Three Lions are set to face San Marino, Albania and Poland to kick off their qualifying campaign, while manager Gareth Southgate will be beginning to finalise his squad ahead of the European Championships’s this summer.

Both Southgate and Klopp will be facing an agonising wait over just how long they will be without the former Sunderland midfielder, who is set to have a scan on Monday.

At club level, his absence will give Klopp a further headache over who to play at the heart of the defence, the German already having had to use 18 different centre-back partnerships this season.

Saturday’s game saw Nat Phillips come on alongside new man Ozan Kabak in place of Henderson, although fellow deadline day signing Ben Davies is also in contention for a starting berth.
