Victor Osimhen: Liverpool’s Attacking Plans Still Include Napoli Forward

In a summer filled with tactical recalibrations and strategic planning, Victor Osimhen remains a name Liverpool simply cannot rule out. Despite the striker currently being on loan at Galatasaray, and with Napoli holding his contract, his profile continues to attract attention at Anfield.

During the latest Anfield Index Transfer Podcast, co-hosts Dave Davis and Trev Downey explored Osimhen’s suitability — and availability — with notable candour. While Liverpool’s priorities remain fluid, Davis admitted, “I just don’t think you can dismiss this right now.”

Osimhen’s Fit in Liverpool’s Attack

Pace, power, and goal-scoring instincts. Osimhen ticks several boxes for a Liverpool forward, especially in the current transitional phase under Arne Slot. “We need pace in our attack this summer, don’t we Trev?” Davis said. “There’s no two ways about it.”

And Osimhen brings more than just sprint speed. “He is a physical specimen,” Davis added. “Big forward and rapid.” These attributes closely match Liverpool’s analytical recruitment criteria — those intangible markers like pressing ability, physicality, and transition threat.

While some concerns around injury history and AFCON involvement have been raised, Trev Downey offered perspective: “Liverpool were happy to have Mané and Salah go [to AFCON].” The club’s willingness to manage such absences may ease any fears about Osimhen’s availability during international windows.

Napoli’s Position and the Market Landscape

With a year left on his Napoli contract and persistent rumours of a summer move, Osimhen appears to be approaching a natural juncture in his career. Davis contextualised it well: “There’s a dearth of elite number nines out there who are gettable.”

That scarcity makes Osimhen even more attractive, particularly with Darwin Núñez’s future at Liverpool looking uncertain. “How far the needle moves for us is almost who replaces Darwin Núñez,” Davis said. “And that will decide so, so much for me.”

Napoli, for their part, may find this the best time to cash in. Davis recalled how “Liverpool tried last summer… they came back in January,” suggesting there has been consistent interest from Anfield. Whether Napoli are now more open to negotiation is unclear — but it’s evident Liverpool haven’t moved on.

Reading Between the Transfer Lines

The conversation also touched on how information is managed and interpreted in the world of transfers. Osimhen’s situation has been clouded by club silence and cautious journalism. Downey observed: “We deal on this show with information but also rumours and speculation because that’s what transfer shows are for.”

It’s worth noting that a credible Nigerian journalist has repeatedly referenced Liverpool’s active interest, which both hosts treated with due respect. “This is a guy who knows Nigerian football inside out,” Davis said, reinforcing the potential legitimacy of the Osimhen links.

Conclusion: Osimhen Still in Play

With Liverpool’s summer rebuild set to be one of the most significant in years, the pursuit of a proven, mobile striker remains paramount. Victor Osimhen, despite his contractual entanglements and external distractions, is a player that fits the brief.

As Davis concluded, “I’m really excited for this summer… if you have an Osimhen, you get people who take big chances — or don’t need as many.” In a window defined by marginal gains and strategic clarity, Liverpool’s interest in Osimhen can’t be discounted.
